This is an introductory course in cognitive psychology: the science of how the mind and brain are organised to produce intelligent human thought processes. Topics include visual cognition, attention, memory, problem solving and expertise, reasoning and decision making, and language comprehension.

Marking learner assessments for the extramural Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology. 

Child and Adolescent Psychopathology (73322)

An introduction to child and adolescent psychopathology. It aims to extend knowledge and understanding of core psychological concepts and theories, in numerous issues related to the psychological disorders experienced across childhood and adolescence.

Thought, Memory and Language (73212)

An introduction to the study of knowing. This includes how we acquire information from our environment, store it in memory, and use it to communicate, solve problems, and make decisions. 

Understanding Mental Health (73223)

Develops knowledge of some of the major psychological disorders and responses to them. Understanding of how working in the mental health field can be structured, and the agencies and institutions that are part of these structures.

Counselling Theory (73197)

This course covers basic counselling micro-skill theory, for example, establishing rapport and reflective attending. It also looks at different types of therapy, the counselling relationship, boundaries, self-care, referral and supervision.

Communication and Relationship Management (73130)

This first-year introductory online course is for people interested in a career working with people.
This could be as a primary care worker, counsellor, support worker, mediator or facilitator. It is also suitable for people wanting work in a role that needs strong interpersonal relationship management skills, such as human resources, public relations, supervision or management.

Review Marker

Reviewing marked assessments examined by other adjunct markers for interrater reliability, marking quality, and consistency. Providing coaching and support to new adjunct markers and reporting on student learning issues. 

Counselling Theory (73197)

When students successfully complete this course they should be able to:
  • Identify and describe basic aspects of counselling practice: engagement, counsellor-client relationship, counselling process
  • Identify and describe a range of valuable micro-skills in counselling
  • Access information in relation to a range of local counselling and support agencies
  • Identify issues related to supervision and referral
  • Understand and apply a range of theories in relation to counselling, especially goals, concepts, techniques and theories of personality
  • Demonstrate an understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi in relation to counselling and psychology in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Provide an overview of a bicultural models and theoretical application.
  • Discuss issues related to counselling in the wider context of a multicultural environment.
